Introduction

Investors in people is an international standard which recognizes those organisations who take a structured approach to informing and developing their people in order to achieve goals and targets. The Department of Labour adopted the Investors In People standard from the UK. Investors in People UK is the proprietor of the intellectual property rights world wide and related rights in the South Africa. The Investors in people project. The Investors In People aims to compliment the objective of the National Skills Development Strategy which aims to develop a high culture of lifelong learning.

The standards is built on four principles:

    • Commitment
    An investor In People is fully committed to developing its people in order to achieve its aims and objectives.
    • Planning
    An Investor in People is clear about its aims and objectives and what its people need to do to achieve them.
    • Evaluation
    An Investors In People understands the impact of its investment in people on its performance.
    • Action
    The investors in people develops its people effectively in order to improve its performance.

SASSETA

The role of SETA’s as delivery as IIP delivery partners has been outlined as follows:

    • Promotion of the Investors in People to local employers
    • Working with employers to gain their commitment and support their movement towards recognition.
    • Inputs to the national development of the standard, good practice.
    • When the organisation is recognised, but their actions are likely to bring the standard into disrepute, the appropriate delivery partner is responsible for initiating action on changes to the organisation . If the delivery partner feels that the allegations are potentially significant to risk the integrity of the standard then the case is referred to the quality Centre.
    Service level agreement standard and criteria for measurement
    • At least 20 enterprises within the jurisdiction of the SETA’s must commit to or achieve the national standard of good practice in skills development by March 2005.
    • The SETA must commit to or achieve the standard of good practice in skills development by March 2005.
Milestones agreed for SETA’s business plans
    • Commitment certificates of 50% of the target delivered to the project office by 30 September 2004
    • First assessments of organisations in the organisations conducted by 1 November 2004.
    • Second set of commitment certificates delivered to the project office by Feb 2005.
    • At least 7 Organisations in the sector assessed the against the standard by March 2005

SASSETA Strategy

    • The SASSETA to approach a fully funded project.
    • Apply for surplus funding from the National Skills Fund and create a special project for the all the organisations that will commit to the standard in our sector.
    • Appoint Internal and External IIP project officers who will assist the organisations to achieve the standards.
    • Marketing the IIP standard linked to other SASSETA initiative

      o Website, Pamphlets and Newsletters
      o Ongoing Communication
      o Attracting New Organisations
SASSETA Strategy

The project was officially launched on the 30 November 2004 with 25 Committed Organisations.
Purpose of the launch:

    • To acknowledge commitment of the 24 Organisations.
    • To link Committed organisations to IIP practitioners.
    • Present framed certificates to all the committed organisation.
    • To celebrate the achievements thus far.
    • To motivate the committed organisations to achieve the standard.
    • To pledge our support to the organisations.
